I am looking to create a private P2P network - sort of a Napster for a group of people who want to share files. Can anyone recommend any product based on successful experience with it?

Hi lineonecorp,

If you just want to share files, try FolderShare (https://www.foldershare.com). It's very easy to use, no matter what your GQ (Geek Quotient) is. If you fancy something with more features like chat, instant messaging, encryption, etc then go for WASTE (http://waste.sourceforge.net/).

Note that  FolderShare stores your shared files on their own servers, which will be accessible to the people you nominate. Whereas WASTE is a completely decentralized system and hence truly private. If you have a big group with many files to share, WASTE is more suitable for your purpose.

Hope this helps. Do let me know which one you tried.

Naser:

I checked the site out. It seems to be information for existing P2P sites. I am familiar with all of them. As per my original note I want to build my own private P2P for a specific group of people so they can share their files with each other across the Internet.

I found a package called BigSpeed and that seemed to do the trick.
