Installing LJ 1200 under win 98

I am trying to install an LJ1200 on an old Dell laptop running 98SE. I have the installation CD on another laptop running XP on the network. It seems to satrt installing OK but after copying the files it tells me that it had problems installing PCL 6 and stops. Windowes then tells me it executed an illegal operation. I have tried this several times and I get the same error.
Help!

Many thanks.

Well ... my first thought was to simply suggest you download the final drivers from HP => HOWEVER ...

Here are all of HP's drivers for the Laserjet 1200:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?&lang=en&cc=us&pnameOID=29790&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=29789&lang=en&cc=us

... note the conspicuous absence of any Windows 98 drivers :-)

The original CD may have Windows 98 drivers on it (is that the case??), but HP no longer provides any updated drivers [here's their official statement:  http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00639112 ]

So ... did you copy the entire installation CD to a folder on the old laptop before running the installation?   If you can't get this to work; you might try using an even-older set of drivers (perhaps for a Laserjet II) IF you can find them.   These will often work ... as many of the newer printers were backwards-compatible with the original laserjet drivers.

garycase,

That's the first place I went to and also noticed the lack of a 98SE!
I'll try copying to the old laptop and see where that leads...

Thanks

You could also try this old Laserjet IIP driver:  http://www.printer-drivers.com/drivers/41/41621.htm

... it's unfortunate that HP didn't simply archive their Win9X drivers with a "we don't support these" note instead of totally removing them from their website.

I've now discovered that my LPT drivers were also duff on this machine. I will install that tomorrow and then try to install the LJ drivers again.

Thanks for continuing support
