sound and audio device problem under windows

Hello every one, I have a problem with the sound and audio device of my desktop computer. This is my sister's computer. OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Chipset on main board is Intel 845GL. Sound card is ALC201A which is integrated on main board. Computer can't login in few days ago because of virus. Now I think I have deleted all virus and I can login to windows. Everything seems working as before except when I run a media player which can't work and reports an error: There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, I checked in device manager and AC97 audio is working fine with no conflict. However when I checked in sound and audio device property in control panel it shows no audio device. I have checked that audio in COMS is AUTO. Windows audio service is running. And I have Plug and Play Software Enumerator working with no error. I have reinstalled the driver several times and still cant work. Does anyone can help me?  And sorry for my poor english.

In the device manager do you see any exclamation mark or question mark, if no go into control panel and under sound and video (where you fouind no audio device) choose your sound card from the drop down menu if it is not there so simply remove the sound card from the device manager and reinstall its drivers again or remove it and restart you computer and it will detect it and install it automatically
and if you hearsounds from other players and this happens only with media player re-install media player or upgrade it
Is there a single speaker in the system tray (icons in the lower right hand corner next to the clock? If not there is your problem.

To 1stITMAN:
I have seen that post before I ask this question. I do have deleted a trojan which is by my hand and update the drivers to "plug and play software enumerator".However still have the problem.

To Dr-4N:
No exclamation and no question mark showed in device manager. Everything looks work correctly and can't make a choice, all choice box in sound and video is gray.

To The_Warlock:
Yes, no sound icon in the system try.
Click START,-->RUN type in DXDIAG click OK
When the program starts look along the tabs on top for sound, how many are showing?
Open the first, there should be a device name , does it correspond to the sound device in device manager?
Is there more than one sound tab. If so what devices are named in the others.
Is the slider for Full acceleration to the far right?

In the first sound tab try the --> Test Direct Sound" what are the results.
To sparkmaker:
In dxdiag there is no sound tab. Just a music tab. Then I run the test using "Microsoft Synthesizer" port, it shows a warning "Because cant find sound driver, can not active music port. Please check if sound card installed and working properly.
To sparkmaker:
The result by dxdiag is Failure at step 6 (Active IDrectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (no driver)
What is your motherboard model or if this is a brand name computer,(Dell,HP,etc) what is the model number?
To sparkmarke:
It is a lenovo's desktop
I need more specifics as there may be known issues, or a driver update that you will need.
Is it a 3000 model, either J series or K series?? Or a Thinkcenter desktop

And I assume from the question header you are running windows XP.
To sparkmaker:
Seems lenovo has different products in US  This is what I translate it from chinese
CPU                          INTEL P4 PGA478 1.7G
Memory             DDR266 128M
FAX/MODEM card  BFV92R Rev2.1 Soft56K Fax/Modema  000000000011003001  1
Motherboard           INTEL845GL
HardDrive                40G
Mouse, SoftDrive, CD Drive, etc
Hope this can be useful.

To sparkmarker:
Yes, operating system is windows XP home edition.
Can you send me a link to the product page for this model, even if its Chinese.
No that didn't work, it brought me to the input page for the mainframe code. When you input the number it should bring you to a page and the model number should be indicated there. Can you post tht model number here
To sparkmaker:
Sorry, I just copy the link here and don't test it. Here is the model number SS01645041
To sparkmaker:
Just input the model number and click the button on the right. It will bring you to next page and there are three button under a small table then click the left one will bring you to the machine's manifest.
To sparkmaker:
The button in the middle is for driver download and right one is for some rules of repair.
You may need to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard. Then reinstall the audio drivers and codecs.
To sparkmaker:
This is what I have done. First I delete the AC97 audio driver and restart system. Then I reinstall the chipset driver for motherboard which I download it from Intel's website and restart system. Then I install sound card driver which I downloaded it from Realtek Semiconductor Co. and restart. Tried several times with dirver version from the latest to the old. Still no use.

Below is the system info which I got from Intel Chipset Identification Utility
Chipset
Detected Chipset: Intel(R) 845G chipset family
Chipset Components

To sparkmaker:
Now, I have updated bios and reinstall the chipset driver for motherboard and audio codecs, still can't work.

I got this computer from my sister when she couldn't login to windows. When I solved this problem, the audio device is out of work. I have checked with my sister that audio device is working fine before that.
Now, she just take the computer back. I have worked with it nearly for half a month. And she told me not to reinstall windows. However, I have learned a lot from this problem and thanks for your kindly help. This is a good place where has such warm heart expert like you. Thanks again. I will enjoy this place.
Thank you for the kind words, and points, they are much appreciated. One other work around would be to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS and install a sound card in a PCI slot.
Good luck.
