Can't boot Windows XP, BSOD Stop code 0X0000008E

I am hoping someone can help me with an irritating problem I am trying to fix my brother's computer. His computer was left, apparently healthy, for 2 weeks while he was on vacation. When he came back and tried to start the computer, he got the BSOD with the message "A prblem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". Error Stop: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005,0XFF9BF1E2, 0XEF803BFC, 0X00000000). Parameters 2 and 3 vary each time I try to restart.

I tried to start in Safe Mode and got the error Stop: 0X0000007E ()xC0000005, 0X81269306, 0XF96D3C4C, 0XF96D394C). Parameters 2,3 and 4 vary each time I try to restart.

This happens every time I try to reboot. I happens right after the Windows XP Home splash screen.

I have tried to boot from a CD (the boot sequence shows as booting from CD-ROM then from IDE hard drive). The result is the same.

I have played around with the RAM modules, testing each of the two modules, with the same result.

I have checked various websites, including Microsoft, for guidance. I've seen many suggestions. But, without being able to even boot into safe mode, I can't try most of the suggestions.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go next?

I forgot to add system details. I don't know much about the system. I do know it is a Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP SP2.  The video adapter is an AGP adapter, not an integrated adapter. I'm sorry I don't know more, my brother is not too computer literate and has no documentation for this computer, and I can't access the hard drive to find specifics. :=(
Try Running " Chkdsk /r " From The Recovery Console
Hello,

As this bluescreen indicates driver issues. If any new hareware has been installed try removing that first.
Also you may want to eliminate additional hardware by removing PCI cards.

But, it's probably the HDD on its way out.
So try chkdsk (as above). You'll need to boot into recovery mode off the CD to do this if safe mode doesn't work.
You may need to adjust the boot sequence in the BIOS before you can boot from the CD.

If chkdsk doesn't help, boot off the CD again and then you can 'repair' Windows installation. This might make it bootable again.

Otherwise I'd suggest a rebuild. Of couse backup all the data first from another system :)

And worst case scenario, you'll need a new hdd.

The system has two CD drives. I have tried physically unhooking both drives, to boot from the hard drive, but same same. The boot sequence is set to boot first from CD-ROM. And the system doesn't  have a floppy. The CD is bootable. I  have used it before. Maybe I should plug a different CD unit into the system to test?

I will. Thank you. (I'm still waiting for the download, so I haven't been able to test yet.)

I got one obstacle cleared -- at first I couldn't boot from the CD-ROM. I replaced it. Still can't boot from hard drive. I booted into KNOPPIX 5.1.1, which boots me into Linux. I've explored around, but am not sure what to look for. Is the BartPE easier to use?  I'm gonna try to locate the minidump file and copy it to a usb flash drive to copy it to my working pc.  At least I'm closer than I was.

Thanks all!  Turns out Windows was corrupted. After replacing the CD-ROM, could boot from CD, but not from HDD. Reformatted HDD, reloaded Windows, all is right again. :-)  Bummer - problem with Windows complicated by a bad CD-ROM. Was able to back up most data using KNOPPIX. That told me HDD was OK, but Windows was bad. The rest was just easy. Thanks again!
