Find a missing external hard drive on a network

Hi!  I am trying to find a missing external hard drive in our laboratory!  It may be attached to some computer that I haven't yet seen.

Are there any networking tools that I could use to find the hard drive?  For example, using the information stored about it on the registry of the computer to which it had formerly been attached.  (Windows XP.)

I am in a laboratory at a university, so the number of computers around is quite high.  (I have not yet ruled out theft either, so don't remind me of that!)

Thanks for any help!  All the best.

I think you should go to the lab IT support people and ask if anyone has handed in an external drive.

Maybe using a login script and seeing if you can find the volume name/ ID .

I would post this in the MSDOS and VB script sections since they have the best chance of helping.

I hope this helps !
I do not know any sniffer witch will allow you to discover a UBS device. your best bet is to send a broarcast mail. My bet is that someone stole it. therefore the importance to lock any removable device in unsecured lab. If the lab is secured... that would narrow your search and do some detective work.

As far as your question go... you cannot discover unroutable device VIA network snifers. SYSExpert might have a solution there but would need the assistance of your Administrator and assuming that you gave a Label to your drive partition.
