Cannot turn Aero back on Vista Business

I was meddling with theme settings the other day and turned of transparency which seemed to disable Aero. Now I cannot seem to turn it back on again. I checked the online help and it sent me to the following

"Under Colors, click Highest (32 bit), and then click OK. (If you can't select 32 bit, check that your resolution is as high as possible, and then try again.)"

Check - OK this is fine

"Click the Monitor tab, and then click a refresh rate that's higher than 10 hertz."

Check - OK

"To change the desktop theme to Windows Vista
Click to open Theme Settings.
In the Theme list, click Windows Vista , and then click OK."

Check - OK

"To change the color scheme to Windows Aero
Click to open Appearance Settings.
In the Color scheme list, click Windows Aero, and then click OK."

Windows Aero is not on the list only Windows Vista Basic, Windows Standard, Windows Classic and some High Contrast ones.

I have checked that I have the latest driver for the Graphics card a Radeon X600

Aero was working fine so I know the paltform supports it - just can't turn it back on again.

Maybe transparency has been turned off. Try this:

Right click your desktop > 'Personalize' > 'Window Colour and Appearance' > 'Enable Transparency'.

If that doesn't work then try changing back to the default theme: Right click your desktop > 'Personalize' > 'Theme' > From the drop-down menu select 'Windows Vista'.

If that still doesn't work try this:
'Start' > Right click 'Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Advanced System Settings' (on the left) > Click 'Settings...' under the 'Performance' category > Make sure 'Adjust for best appearance' is selected & click apply.

ASKER

Right click your desktop > 'Personalize' > 'Window Colour and Appearance' > 'Enable Transparency'.
- There is no option here to enable tranparency

If that doesn't work then try changing back to the default theme: Right click your desktop > 'Personalize' > 'Theme' > From the drop-down menu select 'Windows Vista'.
 - Did that

If that still doesn't work try this:
'Start' > Right click 'Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Advanced System Settings' (on the left) > Click 'Settings...' under the 'Performance' category > Make sure 'Adjust for best appearance' is selected & click apply.
- Did that already and rebooted

Can not turn aero back on

See if this advice from someone named Lang will work for you:

Try this:

Ensure that you have the following registry values set to :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPol icy set to 2 (32-bit
DWORD)

2/ Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges:

- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'

I looked up my registry (regedit.exe at the Run prompt reached by holding down Winkey and R key) and those two values are present.  (By the way, if you're not familiar with registry editing, the key HKCU stands for the long name of HKEY_CURRENT_USER)  I looked up the service with a name of uxsms, and found it was something called Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager.  You can check that service by typing SERVICES.MSC in the Run prompt and then scrolling down to the proper name.

I do not know whether the advice given above solved the questioner's problem on that link above; he never came back to give any confirmation.  (Reminds me of a lot of current Expert-Exchange questioners who just abandon their questions...)
I seem to have solved this one. I had a WinVNC virual graphics driver installed. Removed it. Rebooted and everything is OK again now. The driver was part of PCHelpware in case this may help someone else searching for answers and gets installed as a graphics driver in the device manager.
OK LeeTutor will do - Thanks for your input by the way. I did find that forum post and had tried it but it had no affect.
Oh - and I'm tidying up my other questions too. Your dig about abandoned questions made me feel guilty ;o)
This thread may be over, but I had a similar problem and I only had Windows Classic and a couple of High contrasts Color schemes to choose from under Appearance.

I verified I had the correct registry settings, had to add 2 for my CompositionPolicy and restart DWM (thanks LeeTutor).

Then under Services I found out that I did not have the Themes service running (I know how could I miss this) I started this service and I was able to see Windows Aero, Vista Basic and the ones before.

I switched to Windows Aero and then I was able to have Aero running.

Props to LeeTutor for setting me off in the right direction.

I think the good experts here have covered it all. In my case I also needed to re-enable the uxsms service has it was disabled ??? the actual full service description that show in  computer management (mmc) is "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager". thx
