WebForm_InitCallback causes object expected JS error

I have an existing web application that uses call back methods.
Since updating to Service pack 1 of Visual Studio, creating a new Web Application and importing some of the existing functionality into the new project I am getting a:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--

WebForm_InitCallback();// -->

At the bottom of pages that is causing and "Object Expected" error?
I have checked that the .axd extension is correctly mapped in IIS as other posts suggested.

Any suggestions on how to fix this ??

I do have a src="/GRC/WebResource.axd?d=RC10jik32jfyk7mWMJLLww2&t=633199362354218750"
on the page but get a HTTP 500 when trying to use that link (fully qualified).

What a pain!!!!

Web config was
<compilation defaultLanguage="c#" />

as soon as updated to this
<compilation defaultLanguage="c#" debug="true" />

Then all my call backs etc started working
