Is It Legal For My Employer To Hack Into Personal Email and Credit Card Accounts With Info Obtained Using Spyware?

My employer obtained passwords for my personal email account (Hotmail) and credit card account (Mastercard). They then used these passwords to view emails and credit card statements which had NOT been created or viewed on company computers. I think they have committed a crime, but I'd like other opinions.

I understand that information that passes across company computers is fair game, but I think they have crossed the line. Thanks.

If these are personnally registerd accounts, not supplied, or paid for by company, then they have definately crossed the line morrally, and probably legaly. E-mail account may possibly be justifiable, depending on your employment contract, and whehter you have used this from company systems. Credit card account is not justifiable unless it is a business supplied account you have used for business purposes (may still be illegal depending on where you are). Definately you need legal advice, best first stop in UK would be to Citizens Advice Bureau, if there is similar organisation (offering free advice, including legal on wide variety of subjects), that is where to start.
