how to replace blank space in the url with "-"

I have about 1000 folders which are created in the web server.

Most of these FOLDERS have blank spaces in between like this:

1. web development
2. visual basic
3. adobe photoshop etc.

when i click on the links from the home page, right now it replaces the blank space in the URL with %20 like this:

http://www.website.com/archive/web%20development
http://www.website.com/archive/visual%20basic
http://www.website.com/archive/adobe%20photoshop

But the client wants these %20 in the urls replaced by a "-" like this:
http://www.website.com/archive/web-development
http://www.website.com/archive/visual-basic
http://www.website.com/archive/adobe-photoshop

can this be done?

any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
