Unknown network controller on Asus Z9000

Performed clean re-install using windows xp sp2 cd.  Followed with installing all drivers from Asus website.  Still have an unknown "driver controller" (code1) in the "other category despite fact that the network card is installed and functioning.  The unknown device is listed as PCI slot 2, device 7.  Everything seems to be working fine but dont' want to leave this unresolved.  Anybody familiar with this laptop or diagnosing unknown devices?

Go into the device manager and post the full PCI ID string from the devices Details page.

Device instance ID:   PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4220&SUBSYS_27018086&REV_05\4&264A3649&0&38A4
Do you by any chance have network "working" wired?

That Device ID is for the Interl Pro wireless network card.

Most laptops these days have 2 different NIC's for wireless and wired, usually its a 10/100/1000 wired NIC and some other Wireless NIC. Alot of brand laptops have the Broadcom 10/100/1000 wired and Intel Pro wireless.

I am using the wired "broadcom 440x" adapter.  I did install the wireless drivers from the asus website but I'm not using the wireless.  I'll try reinstalling the wireless.
Yeah, its kinda strange, if I remember correctly Intel Pro cards get installed automaticly by XP.

If you can't install it for some reason, might have a bad NIC on your hands, or maybe the Intel Pro nic is disabled in the BIOS while still being detected by windows.

If you really don't use it and don't plan on using it any time soon, I wouldn't even bother installing it.

On my laptop I have 4 devices I never install, the builtin webcam, the builtin modem, the builtin fingerprint sensor and the builtin Java card reader.

Install of WLan fails each time.  At least I know now what it is.  Cannot get driver installed using "update" and completely uninstalling and reinstalling fails as well.  Strange, considerring the driver package is from the notebook manufacturer's own driver page.  Any recommendations how I can determine and get  the exact driver I need?  On a desktop I would just rip it out and take a look at it.

That did it.  Installing the intel driver rather than the one posted at the Asus site got the wireless working and eliminated the unknown device.  Thanks JanSchotsmans!
