Making XP Pro a file server?
Can it be done? If so, how would you do that and could you set it up under a 2003 domain? How would you give out permissions for certain files using the 2003 server? or would you have to do that locally?
i take it this machine is part of the domain?
If it was to be on all the time, sure. Not a typical file-server but it could function as such.
Easy method:
Rename the computer. Right-click My comp > Properties > Hardware > Computer Name - I think that's the location, but maybe it's a bit different.
Call it something like fileserver01, something generic anyway.
Then, as a domain computer, you can map drives on other computers to:
\\fileserver01\c$
.. which is the share name for the C: drive. Should work as is, if not, make sure the user has admin rights and I think this is a quick solution to your query.

You can use file and printer sharing to share out directories to other users. You'll have to create the user accounts with the password of those users you are going to allow to connect. One thing you must be aware of, XP pro only allows 10 simultaneous connections to it's shares, so it is only a limited file server. You can't use AD to manage the permissions.

you can create shares as you would normally log on to the machine and share out the folder and add users
