SBS 2003 Cannot Resolve external DNS names
I have a SBS 2003 server that has never been configured from the start. My main problem is that the DNS server will not resolve DNS requests for External domain names. The server will resolve local computer names fine. I noticed that if you add a "fowarder" ther server will resolve but im still stumped why it wont resolve on its own. Root hints are all in place. Any Suggestions?

Hi
Maybe is a good idea to look on firewall configuration. Your server need to comunicate using port 53 UDP and TCP for name resolution.
Anyway, implementing a forwarders is not such a bad idea.

Since the server is resolving using fowarders one would think that it is not a firewall issue. The windows firewall is not enabled and port 53 is not blocked on the gateway router/firewall. Anyway, Its working with fowarders for now so im going to move this problem to the bottom of the list. Maybee a few more suggestions will come in for me to try.

I have many clients with SBS servers and we always use forwarder. Its not a problem, Its why you have forwarders. If your server cant resolve the request it forwards it somewhere else. Sometimes it will be able to resolve without forwarders but if you can specify it, its even better.
In this time you can look on this page

If there are no forwarders, then it should resolve via root-hints as long as you've not blocked outbound traffic somehow.
The thing is that all of this is configured on an SBS automatically when you run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW -- linked as "Connect to the Internet on the To-Do list in the Server Management Console)
A visual how-to for that is here: http://sbsurl.com/ceicw
