How do I remove privacy_danger virus and restore active desktop to it's original state?

Acidentally downloaded a privacy_danger virus.  After attempting to remove the virus by deleteing the privacy_dange folder and files, I now have lost my active desktop (completely white desktop).  Also get an intermittent pop-up error message saying 'Cannot find privacy_danger ...' when logging on and on occasion when using explorer.

This is likely a Smitfraud infection.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

If that confirms the infection (post the log it produces here if you're not sure) than run Option #2 in Safe Mode to clean.

If you run Hijackthis, it will help some of the Experts identify specifically which flavor(s) of malware you have.

Hi Wade_OU812,

I just noticed that this is your first question at EE.
Welcome and thank you for using Experts-Exchange service.

I'm glad to assume that the problem has been resolved?
In case you're not aware, you can also award points to more than one experts by clicking the "Accept Multiple solutions" button, you can then distribute the points(however you like) to the experts whose comments were able to help you or comments from experts that you found useful.

Since InDiGenus also suggested the same tool, if you like to split points a Mod or a Zone Advisor can re-open this thread for you, just say so.

Thank you.
