Cached alias in To: field in Outlook not updated

When a member of staff moved on I changed her mailbox to a generic address for the post. Eg. Mary Smith mailbox became 'Area Manager' and the new area manager and her secretary both have access to the now shared mailbox.
The problem is that when other staff start typing Area Manager into the To: field in outlook the cahed address is diplayed with the old alias: Area Manager <mary.smith>
I've changed the Diplay name, alias and every other reference to mary.smith I can find in ADU+C, refresehed the Offline GAL, downloaded it in Outlook and deleted the cached address entry, but nothing has made any difference.
Any helpful suggestions (apart from telling me I shouldn't have changed the alias in the first place :) ??)

Thanks

how long has it been? if it's under 24 hours, and you've got the outlook clients set to "cached mode" then they'll take 24 hours to pick up the new GAL.

It's been a couple of weeks at least, and I also rebuilt the offline address book and re-downloaded it in Outlook.
have you tried changing the AD name (right click on the user in AD and choose rename)?
Yup, changed AD username, display name, alias, X400 address.
The only remaining reference to the old name to be seen in ADU+C is a non-primary SMTP address in case people still use the original one.
that is totally weird. Sounds like AD corruption then. have you tried using PFAVADMIN to look at the mailbox directly?
If you are using information that comes up when you start typing the information, then that is not updated automatically. You have to delete it and then reselect it from the GAL.

However the information in the < > is key to the operation of the mailbox. If you change that then no one will be able to reply to any email that user has sent internally, and the auto complete information will be invalid. I actually do NOT recommend accounts are renamed for this very reason.

If you insist, then there will be an entry left in the domain that can only be seen by adsiedit.msc. However as soon as you change it, no one will be able to email that account until the Offline Address Book is updated and the clients have downloaded it. Depending on what time you make that change it could be over 24 hours before the change is seen by everyone.

What you should have done was created a new user account. If you wanted to retain the data create a new account without a mailbox and then delete the original user account. Then attach the orphaned mailbox to the new account.

Simon.
