How do I set up e-mail auto-response on exchange server 2003 for one user:
use rules in outlook (for one user) or as mickeyfan said, use out of office if its for all messages.
but if its for a certain condition like, from a certain sender or contains certain words in the subject, etc....you can have the server reply with an auto response that you specify (this is done with rules in outlook)

I have tried both and it does not receive the auto response messages with a gmail and hotmail accounts. any help???
the out of office assistant didn't even work?
Is both OOTO and Automatic Replies to the internet enabled in ESM? They aren't on by default.
Global Settings, Internet Message Formats. Right click on the default and click Properties. On the Advanced tab.
However be aware that auto replies to the internet is high risk - email loops etc.

but by enabling it, will that pose any security risk as was suggested earlier?
You have two choices only.
You either have to enable it and accept the security risk, or not enable it and don't have auto replies to the internet.
Personally I prefer the latter and don't allow automatic replies on any of the servers that I manage. I don't trust users not to setup a rule that causes an email loop.

spammers can verify that your email is valid if they get an out of office reply
the email loop is that if you have your out of office on and you email yourself it could start an email loop however in exchange out of office replies only go the same sender one time, for each time the out of office is turned on, so i don't think that would happen.

another example of the email loop is when you are on a mailing list and your OOO gets sent to everyone on the (including you) so in effect the same thing---you're sending yourself an email and OOO causes a loop--however i don't think that would happen with exchange 03 as it only sends one OOO per sender

sounds good to me- thanks!
yeah, I do agree with Sembee. I just noticed an OOO reply to a spam email sitting in my queue.
Out of Office doesn't usually cause a loop, and the spam problem is not so much of an issue because most spam is spoofed anyway.
OOTO messages only go out once a day by default, so cannot cause a loop in most cases.
The major issue is automatic replies - as they reply to every message. Setup an automatic reply on an Exchange account and on an external account and then they will loop. Exchange will sometimes pick it up, but not always.

If I enable auto reply on Exchange 2003 and not include the email account in the Global Address List internally or part of any group email internally will that cause a loop. This email account is only for external people to send email to that account.
It works great. We have had zero problems.
