Backup Fails when starting VSS

Backup fails immediately with this error message:
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

i found the question on this article:,

and it pointed to 2 hot fixes (kb/913648) and (kb/891957) , but i cant get the files to perform the quick fixes, i tried to contact Microsoft using the site, but haven't received anything from them, are there any other suggestions on getting these files or a most effective way to get a response from microsoft??.

i also take any suggestions on the backup error.

I tried that hot fix, but i get the same error. any other suggestions?? i also tried the 2 downloads previusly mentioned, but they are only applicable for SP1.

i juts noticed something else, the SBSMONITORING service is failing to start, i tried to start manually and it fails, i get the following error in event viewer:

SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: Unable to connect to server 'NSSVR\SBSMONITORING'; SQLServerAgent cannot start).

i am really new to SQL, so please understand if i am not following the correct troubleshooting steps, i try to login to SQL using the SQL server management studio express and i get this error (below), once again, i am not a SQL guru, but it seems like i am having a authentication problem, the only reason why i bring this up is because teh event viewer also has an entry for VSS that refers to a SQL error, please see the 2 errors:

One other thing that i forgot to mention was, that the administrator password was reset when i started to work on this project, i am not sure if this should cause an impact.

You shouldn't manually mess with the SBSMonitoring SQL Database.  If it's not working right, just reinstall it through the SBS Integrated Setup.

But I'm wondering if this server was properly upgraded to SP2.  Can you please post the results from running SYSTEMINFO at a command prompt?

Okay, instead of patching, please try re-registering the dll's listed in this KB article:

Before doing that though, you need to fix your DNS settings.  Please disable the 1394 Net Adapter, then you need to have separate IP subnets on your NICs as shown in the example here:

Full networking information for SBS is at and make sure you run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW -- which is linked as Connect to the Internet in the Server Management Console > Internet and Email) once you've set the NICs correctly.

OK, i will make those changes and will post an update, for right now, i will accept this as a solution, i seem to have more problems than just the VSS.
