What is QTSTimer?

I think its a service related to Quick Time. Is this process visible in task manager? If yes, then download process explorer from www.sysinternals.com, launch process explorer and highlight QTSTimer.exe. The description and the company name column would tell u more about this process and would help in determining whether its a legitimate one or no.

Could you do a search on your pc for QTSTimer and post back with where that file is located?

QTSTimer is not showing up in the task manager under "processes".

Your HJT log looks clean.  And definitely no references to QTSTimer.  I also saw where it may be part of QuickTime, but that was only referenced in conjunction with using Opera as your web browser.

Does it show up when you run Process Explorer (direct link below)

Had you been running QuickTime prior to the shutdown when you received the error message?

Did you do a hard drive search of QTSTimer just like Michko mentioned? also do a search of it in the registry and paste the results here.

Came up with nothing on computer search, Process Monitor, and Process Explorer but did come up with something in the Registry Search:

and the following show:

Name= (Default) Type REG_SZ Data (value not set)
Name = 000 Type REG_SZ Data QTSTimer

That's the history data from where you did the search on your hard drive for QTSTimer.  You can double-check this by doing another search, say just for QTS, then checking back on this key.  It should have then have QTS under data.

Yeah, it was just a result of doing the search.

I had been using Firefox just before shutting down, but don't remember using QuickTime. I do not have QuickTime enabled at startup--it has to be started manually. Maybe a website I was using used QuickTime and it's something related to that.

I'm stumped.

Nope. Doesn't show up on either, and I went through the very long list carefully.
