Error -40 opening Entouage email - How to recover all emails / contacts etc.?

My client has an Apple Mac and today has encountered the message below when starting Entourage.
He does not have a backup of his entourage data (emails /contacts) and is very concered.

Before just clicking the repair option advised I wanted to get the best advice I could regaring the error.

Also what precautions should I take before attempting repair? Can I take my opwn backup of the data file and if so where is it located?

Error messages below:

"An error occurred while launching. A read/write error has occurred (-40). "

Which is then followed by:

"Are you sure you want to rebuild your database? This could take a long time depending on how many messages you have in your database.
Rebuilding your database repairs damage and compacts the file, freeing hard disk space. Your rebuilt database will be saved to a new file, and your current database will be saved as a backup.
Typical Rebuild
click to perform simple repairs and compact your database file.
Advanced Rebuild
click to repair problems that remain after performing a Typical Rebuild. if you have any online Hotmail or IMAP accounts, you will have to download your folder lists and messages from the server again.
>CANCEL<    >REBUILD<
"

Thanks

ON attemtping to do the rebuild it fails and actualy says it is unlikel wewllbe able to recover the data.

Any ideas on what I should do?
Further note.

It is actually after attemping the database reuild that it immedeitly shows the message
"An error occurred while launching. A read/write error has occurred (-40). "

If then says it is unliklely you will be able to fix this file.

I have trasnferred the "database" file to my PC for investigation.

Is there anything that will salvage as much information from this file  as possible?
In the end we hired a MAc specalist. They took away the database folder and applied a special reocvery tool which retreived all of the emails.
The links never solved the problem for me but it may for others and was the only suggestion made. In the end we hired a mac specialist to solve the problem who repaired the mailbox.
