Error message when configuring printer port in windows xp

When choosing "configure port" from the port tab on the printer properties page, we receive the following message:

"an error occurred during port configuration. operation could not be completed"

It is a lexmark network port (not standard tcp/ip), however there are no Lexmark applications installed on the PC.

I know that i could delete the printer and reinstall, but i would rather not lose the configuration since this same printer is installed on a number of laptops, each of them experiencing this same issue.

To add a little to Freeman-B, all the lexmark printers I've come across are happy to use either a TCP/IP port or the "Lexmark Lame-ass" port. I don't even know the benifits of using the Lexmark one, I always delete them straight away.
