are there any tools (even pay-for) to do a virus scan WITHOUT incurring all the baggage that one gets with all the standard packages such as Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc.

I just want to manually scan my disks (incl email messages (OUTLOOK) )   and not incur any automatic scanning of outgoing/incoming email messages, etc.

thanks

Why one would want to do this I don't know....but, you can just simply turn of the real time or on access scanning. Every AV I know of turns these on by default, for a reason. Once the malware slips past the protection then normal scanners may not be able to fix it. That is the one good thing AV's do. Is stop it BEFORE it happens. But like I said if you wish to then just turn them off...

The other thought I just had was if all you wanted was scanning then you could use the online AV scanners and not install AV at all. I am not recommending that by any means...but you could.

I know I know...
I have been burnt by all three that i've installed on my production system.
They want to be too smart for just the basic occasional scan that i need -- on this system, it's only an occasional external access that happens with email or the internet, thus the risk is very low.
but the risk is high that NortonAV screws it up   :(

So in the past experiences, i have turned everything off, and still there are obscure interactions.

I am not familiar with online scanners?  please clarify?  are they javascript based, and how do they access my files?

thanks
