I have a Lenovo R6i that will not come out of sleep mode. I have to hold down the power button until it shuts off and then restart. The function key does not bring it out of sleep mode. Neither does depressing the power button briefly.  Any suggestions?

In this case I would suspect the motherboard having some problems ...... since previously in my company got 1 notebook also have such problem ...... and that notebook after a while we keep on using it, the motherboard just died ...... Think it is the symptom that the motherboard will break down soon .....

suggest you turn off the Sleep mode and just shut down when not in use ..... Good Luck !!!

Turns out to a conflict with the startup programs. I am not sure which one, I turned off all of them except the ones that had to run and the problem went away.
