You need to also apply the patch found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349

it did not help.  The dll still does not register, and my backups still fail complaining about the shadow copy.

Since I don't know the exact steps you took to register the dll's it's difficult for me to offer up any advice other than providing those for you again to make sure that you got the correct set of instructions.

Click START > Run... > CMD > OK

Then in the Command window enter each of the following commands:

CD %SystemRoot%\system32

Net stop vss

Net stop swprv

regsvr32 ole32.dll

regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

vssvc /Register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll

regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

regsvr32 es.dll

regsvr32 stdprov.dll

regsvr32 vssui.dll

regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 msxml4.dll

After completing the registration of the DLLs enter this command: vssadmin list writers

You should see the writers listed.

If so, see if you can run a manual backup of the System State or a small directory.

Hi... thanks.  I began to execute the commands you specified.  I got an error on the net stop swprv, (system error 1060 has occured.  The specified service does not excist as an installed service).  The rest of the commands executed properly.  When  I tried the backup (the purpose of the whole exercise), I get a failure.. The report says that an error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x8004230f.

Please open services.msc and see if the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service is listed and not disabled.  It should be set to "Manual".

Can you start it from the Services Console?  Because the error you got would only occur if either you spelled the service name wrong, or it's dll file was either missing or corrupt.
