I'm learning a beginner with php and have found a good way to learn with other formats is to reverse engineer pages to understand how they are constructed. Is there a way to do with with php pages? Or is this taboo?

Because PHP is server side and all the code is executed before the page gets to your computer, it is impossible to reverse engineer it.  You would need to somehow get the source code in order to do this, and unless it's a tutorial site, that probably won't happen.
