How do I know if my mainboard is working properly ?

Is there any diagnostic tool that can be used to check if a mainboard is working properly ? I m looking for something that can be used before the O.S. loads so the motherboard can be checked before installing any operating system.

Note: my system use an Intel D865PERL mainboard.

To test a motherboard on its own is not really feasible as you would need specialized equipment that is only found in the manufacturing industry. The next best thing is to install the bare minimum of components and keep adding components one at a time. This would pinpoint any problem areas quickly as the last component to be added would be the problem.

You can start with just the CPU, this should start the motherboard but give you a Ram missing beep code,
Add one stick of ram and start, this should give a video Beep code.
Add the video card next, you should get the  post message on the monitor but should stop when no boot device is found.
Next you can add a cd drive, upon startup go into the BIOS, check for correct time and date, also make the cd the boot device.
At this point a live cd shoiuld be used to boot the system from. Knoppix should fit the bill as it enumerates all hardware on boot and will generate a error in the boot log if something is amiss. It will also run an OS from the cd without having to install it to a hard drive.
Next add the hard drive, and at post enter the BIOS, see that the hard drive is properly identified. You can also run the knoppix at this point and the hard drive should be seen by it.

This should give you all the testing you need if the motherboard is good.

If you already have all the components together then run the knoppix disk and see if any issues come up.

Use the UBCD to run memory tests, HDD tests, and CPU tests. You can also boot from a Knoppix or UBCD4Win CD to test USB and other devices.
