Have you checked the jumper settings to make sure you've got it set to master/slave or cable select as appropriate?

That model came out about 2.5 years ago - it's possible the CD drive's laser is misaligned, and can't read discs anymore.  Have you tested replacing the drive?

try to boot from a bootable cd - then you're sure it can read a cd  - pick a xp cd, or one of these :
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.0CD-2006-12-30-EN.iso      Knoppix
www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/                                     BartPe

and of course, it can be bad; test it on, another PC, or test with another cd drive on this one

So it doesn't see the cd drive in my computer?

I have had this problem before, I removed the lower and upper filters keys from the registry and it fixed it.
Goto start > run and type regedit.exe  press ok.
Browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CURRENTCONTROLSET
CONTROL
CLASS
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In this folder there should be something called "Lowerfilters"
Delete this key and then restart your computer.
It worked for me.

Cheers :)

I'd suggest backing up the key before you delete it -- just in case :)
