A flie I commonly  is password secured but I do not remember doing this nor do any of my passwords open it. Is there way I can circumvent this as the data is important to me? I realise that this precisely how security is meant to work but I cannot understand how this file has become locked.

Have you tried making sure your password  is type in the proper case. Passwords in FM are case sensitive.

I have used this product with success it's called Filemaker Key

Hopefully the case sensitive approach solves the problem...

I have tried all permutations of upper and lower cases for my known passwords (I always use the same few alternatives) but it did not recognise them. The Filemaker Key looks interesting but the demo only downloads in Windows format and the two character password limitation on the demo version hardly makes it a worthwhile demo. Not sure it is worth $45 to obtain full copy as I do not secure my files and have no idea how this particular file became password protected.

I have found that a backed up copy of the file is only slightly out of date and I can open this version without problem. This would seem to be the best option at the moment.

You could also try to recover the file by selecting the recovery option under the file menu in case the lock was caused by a corruption. Though I must admit I have never heard of such a thing happening

I think there has been a corruption of Keychain in my system since I booted up using recovery disk to test a screen problem at the weekend. I am now being asked to verify other application files like Entourage which seems to have been fixed by resetting the keychain application, though I still cannot open the Filemaker file. Has all the hallmarks of a virus but having a Mac you tend to think that is unlikely, though probably not impossible.

I think the problem is a virus, The keychain should not affect the outcome if you remove the Filemaker key from the list of keys.
