First i have a listbox that shows some information from a database table, i need this listbox to be updated with new information from the database tables every minute or so.

I was thinking a timer function was the way to go here?

Anyway, i have not used any timers in VB.net before, so i need some help, and hopefully an example on how it should be done.

put a timer on the form and double click it, and the timer routine sub call will apear, write you code in there for populating list box the way you do it for the first time. Set the timer property for few milliseconds as require and everything should be good.
