Microsfot Genuine Software Problem.

Hi All.
We have inherited a client who runs a small network SBS2003 and 5 clients.

One of these clients (laptop) has a copy of Windows XP Pro installed (Swedish Language) that appears to a be copy (i.e. not an original legit copy) and at the bottom right of the screen there is a little 'star' icon indicating that there is a problem.

I told the customer the problem and they are happy (this time) to install an original copy and pay the licence fee however when we try to follow the Windows Genuine Advantage web link (the star at the bottom right of the screen) it tries to download the active x software to perform the genuine check but fails and goes to a Microsoft screen that says 'cannot find the page you are looking for'.

I was under the impression that I could follow this route to purchase a genuine license and restore functionality - but it seems not.

My question is - what routes do I have?
Can I install an original version without destroying the data on the laptop? (Through the usual method of booting up a windows CD)
Is there an online route (Through the existing operating system that’s a copy) to activate it and purchase a license?

Any help or ideas would be great.

First of all - I would recommend running a repair install with a new, legitimate Windows CD - and enter the appropriate key when prompted.
You should not lose any data - and should only have to reinstall a couple of programs.
Then you can activate in the normal way.

thats great - as I thought.

One other question. If I use a UK version of Windows XP Pro - will it allow me to instal it so that Swedish is the installed language - i.e. all messages, icons etc are in swedish? (As they are now)

No - to get full language support - in a language other that US English - you will need a localised copy of XP.

Before you do this - however - you could try changing your license key by launching C:\Windows\system32\msoobe /a from the Run box.
This should give you the opportunity to enter a valid key - and activate.

Personally - I would recommend the first method, though.

The advantage of the last method - msoobe is that it would retain the swedish version of his OS.

Persumably it would not cause a problem to try thi smethod first?

No - there shouldn't be any issue in trying msoobe /a first.

You say that you tried this method:

Could you possibly try this when running in a newly created local Administrator account?

The msoobe method is secondary (to my mind) because this frequently errors - especially on non-legitimate Windows.

I had not tried the method - PKUInstructions - but I will now - That could be just what I am looking for.
