Can anyone explain the DELL OpenManage suite to me - what components are there, and which do I need for simple monitoring and alerts from a DELL server

Hi,

We have a number of DELL servers and I have the DELL OpenManage Server Administrator installed on each of the servers to monitor the hardware components status. I have alerts setup for events such a fan failure or exceeding the temperature threshold etc.

However I do not seem to be able to setup alerts on the storage components, i.e. to flag when a disk becomes degraded or fails or goes offline. I've heard that there is an OpenManage component called 'IT Administrator' that will monitor DELL servers remotely and allow alerts for failing disks... Does such a product exist? If so what is it called and what are it's capabilities?

IT Manager is one software which you need to install on a server and need to configure all the clients with the server ip address in SNMP.
From here you can see all the servers on the IT manager console and manage all of them.

Its a 250 MB file

IT Assistant + OMSA - Monitor all servers from single console Ex : Laptop

To Setup the IT Assistant in your Environment
Every Dell Server should have an OMSA Agent to be installed & SNMP should be configured, which will point to IT Assistant Machine.
Find the relevant links below.

1) OMSA for Windows

2) OMSA for Linux

3) IT Assistant (Dell OpenManage Management Station – Windows Version)

Excellent! So OMSA is 'OpenManage Server Administrator' which I already have installed on each server.

I've also installed the IT assistant but wasn't having much joy with it - I could scan the network and pickup devices names, but not 'administer' any of the servers.

Questions:
Just to clarify - do firewall ports need opening to allow OMSA / IT Assistant to communicate?

How would I configure SNMP (not used it before) on the monitoring and monitored server?...

As i told you..
You need to inventory all servers.Later install OMSA on the client machines then put the IT assistant IP address on the SNMP
