Currently we have 4 300gig hard drives in the machine running raid 5.  2 of them are active, 1 is needed for the raid to run, and the other is a hot spare.

How to we make the hot spare an active drive?  We have extra hard drives that we could use in the event that it fails and we would rather be able to use the space on that drive.

I'm not familiar with your exact hardware but in most instances you will be required to take an Image of the system, create the new logical drive (in your case to not include that 4th drive rather that use it as a hot-spare) and Re-image the new logical drive. While I know there are some RAID controllers that will allow you to migrate to different RAID levels on the fly or add disks I am just not sure if yours allows for this. Can you provide me the exact model of the embedded controller your server is running?
