I have Microsoft Word installed, but it won't default to it when I open a doc.  How can I make it default to Microsoft Word?

Folder options >file types > extension .DOC >  change opens with to Microsoft Office Word.

I am assuming you are using a windows OS?

You access the folder options from the explorer window > Tools menu.

Simplest :
1. Press the keyboard Shift Button (keep it pressed) and Right Click on the file ( name1.doc ) you want to open in MS Word.
2. In the Right Click Menu that appears, Click on "Open With ..."
3. Select Microsoft Word in the "Select Program" List.
    If you don't see "Microsoft Word" in the Select Program List, Click on the Browse Button and browse to C:\Program Files\Microsft Office" and select the Application "Winword.exe" or "Winword"
4. *** Click in the Check Box - "Always use this program ...." and Click on OK.
