Depending on your configuration forefront can run all the time.....

the best design for FF is in a split server scenario where the have an Edge that scans the items at entry, then the BE hub or mbx would see the message scanned and pass it to the mbx leaving it alone.

what is your setup... some coudl argue that you no longer need AV on you mbx servers since all messages pass through the hub.

I have a edge box runing FF , a second box with all the rest (mbx,Hub,Cas) runing FF

Then I would say no, but its all about your confort level.... the purpose for the mbx not running all the time is to improve performance...

but you can set FF to run all the time if you want.

I am saying its your choice and your comfort level.....

If you running FF on the Edge  you are scanning all inbound mail

and since you have FF on the cas/hub/mbx are you covered for internal mail

If you want  you can schedule FF on the mbx to scan at any interval you want to check the databases.
