The complete story about forward and redirect

I know the basic difference that response.sendRedirect sends back the header and RequestDispatcher.forward just forwards request to another resource.
The big question are there other methods to do these kind of operations other than the above 2 methods.
Also Is session lost in response.sendRedirect.What is the complete picture when it comes to forwarding/redirect to a new page in or outside the app ?

You seem to have the basic idea about forward vs. redirect.  This page documents what you've said in a little more detail:

There are no other methods within the servlet container and the HTTP protocol.  You can write your own version of forward or redirect, but it's not clear what the value of that would be.

Maybe if you explained why you don't want to use the existing forward and redirect methods?
