Rename a Builtin Group in Vista Home

I need to rename the "users" group on a Windows Vista Home Pc to Users. The trouble is that the users group on this particular laptop is called 'Benutzer' because it is a German installation, but the English software that I am trying to install stops at 3/4 with a message 'Users is not a valid group...'. The same software on an English version of Vista Home installs completely.

  Hi mb042
You can not rename a builtin group. Lets say that you somehow did, then policies, registries, file permissions assigned to that group by windows will get corrupt and operating system will not function.
I suggest you to create a group called Users, then add this user into that group too. So the user will be member of 2 groups, Benutzer and Users.
Also changing regional options to English might work, but most probably, the software you try to install does not support German, and might not operate correctly even you somehow install it.

Groups and Users, including inbuilt, rely on their SID and not their name(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330), which is why you can rename users and normal groups without implication. But by the quiet response, I would say there is no easy way to do this for the builtin groups.

Then right-click the group in local users and groups mmc and click rename.

Are your corporate email signatures appalling?

Is it scary how unprofessional your email signatures look? Do users create their own terrible designs and give themselves stupid job titles? You can make this a lot easier for yourself by choosing an email signature management solution from Exclaimer today.

MrHusy: It's home edition, the mmc is disabled (also connecting from a remote PC the mmc(users and groups) is disabled)
avatar-e: The software is released by Telstra Australia (the most arrogant ISP and phone provider known to mankind - if it doesn't work, it's your problem)

avatar-e: The software is at http://www.bigpond.com/res/images/helpcenterFAQs/bwbcmwin32installer_2.8.13.msi
but I have managed to get around the issue by doing some low level fudging with the following registry key. (Not reccomended for anyone reading this - do at your own peril)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\SAM\Domains\Builtin\Aliases\00000221
If anyone has an easier way of doing this for the future, please add your comments.
Thanks
