How (where) do I connect telephone and data cables in telephone closet...

How  (where) do I land the telephone and data cat 5 and cat 6 cables in the telephone closet / 110 board and patch ports are in the closet already.

I'm pulling several new telephone and data cabels to several locations in office space, and i need to punch them down in the telephone closet.

Have not had opportunity to do much of this end of the cableing...

It depends.

Most old school closets I've seen have the telephone cabling on a plywood backed wall with a frame containing multiple 66 blocks on it.  Then 2-pair cat3 jumpers run from the station terminations up and around through wire management over to the "feeder" terminations which run back to the pbx.

However, if you're putting in a new installation and they're going to be IP phones, then they'll share the same layer 1 network (the same wire) and you would terminate everything all together on patch panels - typically rj45 female on the front, and 110 style terminations on the back.

If you could give a little more detail on what you're doing I could try to help more - is this a new install?  You said there's panels already there - where are they?  What kind of phones (standard digital or new IP phones)? etc.

Thank you for getting this started...
I will give more information: There is a  96 position 110 board mounted on plywood in the closet, as well as a patch panel tower with  72 ports.
This is an existing system...and I am adding telephone and data cables
Telephone and Data cables are landed in different locations ie...

Telephone - White Jacketed Cat 5, all going to the 110 board...
Data         - Blue Jacketed Cat 6, all going to the tower patch panel

At each work station there is a two port jack, one for telephone ( cat 5 ), and one for data ( cat 6 )
I've pulled the cables from the work stations to the closet, and now its time to land the cables, respectivley on the 110 board (telephone) and the data  (patch panel ).

What I'm not sure about is:
!. do I land the telephone cables on the base of the 110 board, or just pick a cable that is already landed on the  base and add a connection clip on top of that and land my wires on top of the clip, or what.

2. do I land the data cables on back of the patch panel tower...? On an empty port ... or just find one that is not being used and plug into it with a rj45 connector, or will I need to punch them on back of a patch port...

Also I have punched the jacks to the EIA/TIA 568 B scheme for the data and the EIA/TIA 568 A for the telephone because that is how the system is installed through out the office building.

Every closet is unique in the fine details - but alike in the larger scheme of things.

For your phones - unless there's some compelling reason not to, I would recommend terminating them the same way they're already done.  If they're not done, and you're just starting - to give you the eaisest flexibility going forward - I would terminate the station cable on a field - say to the right.  Terminate the phone system cables on a field say to the left.  Then, I would run jumper wires from the front of the blocks from the stations and cross connect into the system cables.  This would give you the most flexibility for moves, adds, changes - which for phones, happen frequently.

For the data - standard practice is to terminate station cabling on the back of the patch panels - usually into 110 termination blocks adhering to the requirements for the category cabling you're using - cat6.  Then, your cross connect patch cables will be terminated with RJ45 on the front of the panels and can easily move to accomodate moves, adds, changes.

568A is better for phones - I'm surprised you didn't stick with this for the whole building - including data - since data can work with either termination scheme equally.

Ps - you want to use a termination scheme that makes sense and is consistent in the closet.  Your stations will move, but your closet shouldn't - so make the cabling scheme start at the beginning and increment consistently so it's easy to find.  Don't deviate from your scheme - so give it some thought to do something that makes sense and is well thought out.  Document your cabling for yourself and the people that follow you.
