WampServer 2 on Vista: Password Woes

Posted on 2007-11-23
Last Modified: 2013-12-13
I installed the latest version of WampServer 2 under Vista.

phpMyAdmin prompted me: "Your configuration file contains settings (root with no password) that correspond to the default MySQL privileged account. Your MySQL server is running with this default, is open to intrusion, and you really should fix this security hole."

I set a password via Privileges | Change password.

I copied this password to $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] in \apps\phpmyadmin2.10.1\

All I get now is: "#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)"

I've tried this several times now, and am certain I'm following the instructions correctly. What can I do?

that error means your root is trying to connect to mysql with no password and that is not allowed since you added a password.

Thank you for that. How might I resolve the issue, given that I have set a password as recommended?

make sure this line look like this

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'mypassword'l
Three Reasons Why Backup is Strategic

Backup is strategic to your business because your data is strategic to your business. Without backup, your business will fail. This white paper explains why it is vital for you to design and immediately execute a backup strategy to protect 100 percent of your data.

As you can see, I've already done that. The password is correct.

just making sure it's incloded in brackets that is all.

Can you connect to it using the command line utility

>mysql -u root -p
then enter your password when prompted.

It is.

I can connect using the command line utility, after entering my password, which is set correctly.

I still get that error message though.

I would double check to make sure that there is only 1 on your computer,
cause if you can do it through the command line,

and given the error message, that tells me that phpmyadim isn't sending the password to the server, so there is a config error somewhere.

There's only the one; this is a default installation and I've never had it installed before.

Perhaps this is a Vista-specific issue?

you need to give the IUSR user read and execute access to the folders that contain your phpmyadmin, and your database.
Vista is a pain that way.

The "IUSR user"? Huh?
LVL 17

Expert Comment

ID: 20343863
IUSR user on Vista, it's the web user that your website uses.

just goto any directory, goto properties, security tab, then try and add a user to the ACL and search for the ISUR user, it will be there.

All I can see is the group or user names, with their respective permissions; no ability to add a user.

Is there not an Edit button with the little shield Symbol on it?

Author Comment

ID: 20344143
Oh, yes. So, I add 'IUSR' under 'Enter the object names to select' for the Administrators group? I gather that's what 'ACL' is?

ACL = Access Control List.

it is the list of users and groups allowed/disallowed to access a particular resource.

No don't add it to the administrators group, that would be a huge security plunder.

Just add the ISUR user to the root direcrory of your phpmyadmin folder.

OK, I've done this now, but it had no effect; the error is the same.

That doesn't look right.
that tells me it's not the file
can you post that one?
it should be much smaller.

I didn't notice that. It's definitely the file, under \Wamp\apps\phpmyadmin2.10.1, from a default installation.

There is a separate file,, which has only 60 lines. Is there something wrong with the package I downloaded from

It might be a specific file for the wampserver implementation of it.
My phpmyadmin is only like 60 some odd lines long, but I complied everything from source.
I don't like package stuff, but that seams to be just me, since most people suggest using wamp and other such complete package products.

any how,
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type']     = 'config';    // Authentication method (config, http or cookie based)?
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user']          = 'root';      // MySQL user
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']      = '';          // MySQL password (only needed
that is empty,
you said you put your password there, well I see none.
Place password there.

I stripped it out, as you suggested.

I didn't say strip it out,

I said put your password there.
That;s where it belongs.

The password is in the file that is on my machine; it is in the correct place. However, as you said "just mask out sensitive information like passwords and such," I stripped the password before posting the code here.

masking means do something like
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']      = 'xxxxx';

removing it entirely, I can't tell if you removed it, if it's default or what.

mask means the samething as wearing a mask, put some over top, not remove entirely.

I suggest, remove entirely, and reinstall.  (Just the phpMyAdmin portion of it.)

Cause I know you say this is the file, but at the top it clearly states that it is not, and that should copy parts of it over and blah blah blah.

At this point, I would reinstall. You said it worked before changing the password, so if you install the phpMyAdmin portion of it only it should ask you for the password during installation and then all should be well.

Thanks. I've tried reinstalling, but to no avail. I can only assume the package is faulty.
