The option "This server requires an SSL-secured connection" is most likely checked and is responsible for the above error.

Try going to Tools -> Options -> Select the Main Setup tab -> Click the E-mail Accounts button -> Choose the View or change existing e-mail accounts radio button -> Select "mel's comcast mail" account ->  Click the Change button -> Click More Settings -> Select the Advanced tab -> Uncheck "This server requires an SSL-secured connection" option for both the Incoming server and the Outgoing server.

The following web address has additional information regarding POP3 server settings for Comcast accounts http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailOutlook17824

I hope this information is helpful.
