How can I make a USB mouse appear as a joystick in Windows?

I have some software that accepts joystick input.  I want to use a mouse, rather than a joystick for X-Y control.  Is there any way that I can plug in a 2nd (or 3rd) mouse and trick Windows (Vista) into thinking that it is a joystick?

There is software that goes the other way, joystick-to-mouse, but I am not aware of any that goes the other way. For what software are you trying to use the mouse?

The software is Autodesk's MotionBuilder.  I'm a novice, and have quickly discovered that trying to create or modify a device driver is beyond my abilities.  I'm hoping for a simpler solution.

MotionBuilder accepts 3 input devices - keyboard, mouse, joystick.  Joysticks do not have the level of accuracy that I need and are also built to reset to center position.  A mouse has both the accuracy that I need and the ability to hold in a position indefinately.  I can use a mouse as the input device, but, that means that the cursor also moves and it's impractical for the user.  The ultimate solution is a second mouse that does not control the cursor, but does appear to the software as a joysitck.

The only option that occurs to me that might meet your requirements is the addition of a serial mouse.
