Unable to delete contacts on iphone or sync w/ outlook 2007

Hi Folks,
I have an iphone that got multiple contacts on the phone due to a sync issue.  I am trying to delete all the contacts on the iphone and start over.  I tried deleting all the contacts in Outlook and re sync however it puts all the contacts from the phone back into outlook.  iTones doesn't give me directional sync capablility.  How is it done?  Hard reset the phone?  How is one suppose to delete even 1 contact out of the phone?  Seems Apple missed this one.
Any help is appreciated

Within Itunes you have the ability to do directional syncronization from the desktop to the phone but not the other way around.  Go into Itunes, wait for the iPhone to show in the device list on the left.  Click on the iPhone, go to the Info tab and then scroll all the way to the bottom.  There is an option there to replace information on the phone.  If this is not checked then the information on the phone and the information on the computer are merged.
To delete a contact on the phone itself, open the contacts, select the individual record you wish to remove.  Once it opens you will see a listing of the phone numbers associated with that contact.  In the upper right corner is an Edit button.  Select this, on the next screen that opens scroll all the way to the bottom and there is a "Delete Contact" button.

Thanks,
I was able to delete the contacts in outlook 2007 and after 3 syncs it followed by deleting all the contacts on the phone.  I didn't happen on the first sync.
