SQL server hangs after nightly maintainence and backup

Hello all
Until recently there were no problems with my companys' SQL server, however lately the services have hung during the night. The backup and maintainence routines are unchanged. Daily maintainence backs up the database's and backup exec does it's job during the night. The application log lists the hang as an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION and I can not get much out of the MSSQL log either only that the maintainence completes and that the exception is caught. No service packs have been applied.

Cheers
Martin

Are you doing a full or incremental backup?  Are you using the SQL server agent for Backup Exec?

Using Back up exec SQL agent

As far as I can see master.sysprocesses only has records since the restart of the MSSQL SERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT.

Ok, so the SQL server crash happens about 15mins after maintainence optimisation is scheduled to start. Deactivating the optimisation, so far, has stopped the problem.

Found the problem. Backup exec was using the SQL server as it's database server. Moved Backup exec database to local MSDE and problem fixed. Incidently default time for Backup exec to maintain the BE database is 4:00am which corrosponded with most of the times the SQL exception was generated, with the exception of those times when the back up ran over.
