where are these hotmail settings?

where are these hotmail settings?
1. I got a new pc with Windows XP and IE 7.0. I used to get an alert at the right hand bottom of my screen (the msn messenger icon) when a new message was received by my hotmail inbox. I have been unable to find the setting to enable this feature.
2. And the feature that shows the number of unread e-mails in my hotmail inbox, which used to be located in (  ) beside my user name when MSN Messenger was open.

I currently have Windows Messenger version 4.7.3001 with .(dot)net services.
I'll look around for Windows Live. It seems Microsoft would have it imbedded in some way to make sure  everyone has it, even the ones who don't want it  That is usually the way they do things.

I'll check it out.

Hopefully there are no features of Windows Live that I'll not want.
Right now I have to enter my password to reach my Hotmail box, even though I put a check mark in the box that says "remember my password". It is defaulting out of my request.
