Epson Printer won't play nice with Vista, & sub-spooler error messages stop all printing

Hello Experets :

I'm running Vista Home Premium on a powerful HP desktop PC. Tons of ram, tons of space, etc etc.  My printer is an Epson Stylus CX4800 All-In-One Printer/Fax/Scanner. I have the correct Vista drivers installed.

The printer has been  a real pleasure to work with : fast, smooth-running, reasonable ink mileage. Then suddenly awhile ago printing jobs sent to the spooler stalled there, with one or both of the following Error messages popping up : 1.) "Printer can not communicate with computer," or, 2.) "Sub-spooler system stopped."[or something _like _that - "My language!"]

Now, when I send a print job, the job does not appear in the  printer queue box that sits in the notification tray. _But _! When I hover the mouse above the box, it shows a pending printer job. Very puzzling!

I'm what you would call an "Intermediate" PC user, so I 've performed all the ordinary fix-it tasks for this issue such as : Uninstall printer in Device Manager [where BTW, the printer shows up as 'Operating Normally - no yellow Question Mark'] >Shutdown>Unplug printer power>Startup>Plug power back in for printer>Re-install printer. No change.

And have tried "Find New Hardware" No luck.

These jobs always say they have  "Completed Successfully." But in fact they are not completing successfully. I have tried both _allowing Windows_ to find drivers on Web, and I have used the drivers I have on disk which I got from Epson.

Any good ideas out there? Your help will be much appreciated!

At times, the printer drivers can get corrupted for various reasons.
1. Have you tried uninstalling the printer driver completely and then reinstalling it and I don't mean simply removing it from the device manager? (This is one of the easiest and simple ways to troubleshoot)
2. secondly, id like you to export a copy of ur print hive, compress it and upload it to www.ee-stuff.com so that i can take a look to see if there are any issues with the print spooler or the print monitor because normally third party print spooler and monitors can cause this issue.

the path to the print hive is hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\print

3. could u also copy paste any error messages that u see in the event viewer related to these errors u spoke about?

Hello 'dreamguy' (reeeaallyy??) < Sorry, that was irresistable. I bet it's very boring for you to get that from all the boys/girls! Ha ha!

Thank-you for your contribution on this printer problem. It is 12 :23 am where I am right now, so I have no business being up playing on the computer right now. Must get to bed.

Tomorrow [today!] , I will get you the info you requested. Is "hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\print" a registry key? I just ran a fast 'find' in regedit and it found nothing like that in registry.

But I have one question before I go any further. You wrote : "Have you tried uninstalling the printer driver completely and then reinstalling it and I don't mean simply removing it from the device manager? (This is one of the easiest and simple ways to troubleshoot). "   I didn't know there was another way of more thorougly uniinstalling hardware. Could you kindly let me know how to do that?

Much appreciated!

sure.
go to printers and faxes
then go to file-->server properties and click on the drivers tab.
then remove the drivers.

Hey Dreamyguy!

UMm...sorry, but I must be stupider than I thought ( hard to believe, I know!) . Regarding yer last post, you wote :

"go to printers and faxes
then go to file-->server properties and click on the drivers tab.
then remove the drivers."

In my Control Panel entry point to "printers and faxes", when I click "File>Servers I get stopped immediately by an Error Message : "Server properties cannot be viewed. The local print spooler services is not running. Pls restart the spooler or restart the machine."But when I go into "Services" to attempt to _Start_ the spooler service I am stopped by another Error Message. which reads : "Windows could not start the  Printer Spooler service on Local Computer. Error 1069: The service did not start due to a login failure."
Helpfull Hint: (?) I do not use a login password to startup this PC, since I am sole user. I tried an experiment on that issue, which failed : I gave myself a password in Control Panel>Users>Change Password. Then I tried to print. Same thing all over AGAIN!  I only intended that new password to be temporary, so I have already removed it from my User Profile.

Does this info lead you anywhere? I hope so, cause I have many urgent printing jobs waiting.

dreamyguy!  : YU DA MAN, BABE!. At LAST, I can print again! Can't thannk you enough! I am having a "troublesome" experience with Vista Home Premium. There are many fab features. Beautifull, smooth interface; useful new apps built-in; when Vist is running good, it is REALLY A GOOD SMOOTH RIDE. But when problems arise, the whole system is too alien and unknown.Updating drivers has been a bit of a hassle too. And too many "Never-Heard-Of' error messages.

But YOU GOT MY ANSWER! THANKS-A-LOT from James Martindale, Vancouver, Canada.
It's great to know that your issue has been fixed. Yeah, Vista has its own share of hassles, especially those relating to drivers, but I hope that things get better down the line. Have a happy new year, bro!
You may download a free tool at www.digitalsupporttech.com. The tool will tell you what causes the problem. It is also free to get it fixed.
