Mail ok through Smarthost but I can lots timeouts when I set to forward through DNS

Can Anyone help? I have come into a new job where they have always had trouble with emails timeing out. We are getting NDRs after about three days after the mails have been sent I have checked the queue and they are trying to get deleivered but are timing out.
This is not all mails though.
And If I set a smarthost up (relay2.Uk.telstra.com) all my mail gets sent out ok but if I change back to DNS the queue of mails start to build up again. I would like to set the exchange server to send mail through DNS as the above relay is not the best option. I have checked that the reverse lookup and it is working and that I am not on any blacklists. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

what are the error messages in the queue viewer?
Can you manually mail out from the mail server

i.e. no firewall/port blocking here if this succeeds

Thank you for your comment I am just getting the information together.
I cannot telnet internally properly so I have had to do as follows:

telnet to (server name not mailhost.servername.domain)
220 mailhost.server.domain Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.183
0 ready at  Thu, 29 Nov 2007 11:20:37 +0000
HELO ZION
250 mailhost.domainname Hello [internal Ip address]
MAIl FROM myname@mydomain
501 5.5.4 Unrecognized parameter myname@mydomain

So I have failed the telnet test.

when emailing throught eh DNS the queue builds up with lots of emails and the status of them is "retry"

The user will receive an email from my exchange server saying the email is delayed after about a day after sending.
Then after another day the user will get the NDR.
I have no other information to add at the moment as I have been running through the smarthost so I have not been able to get the actual heading error for you.

Does it make sense?

I didn't have this configured:

DOH!

Looks like it may have fixed it but I need to run it for a hour or so to see if this has fixed the issue. If so I shall come back and award you the points. Thank you very much. Fingers crossed.

Thanks. Easy to follow links and easy to follow comments which enabled me a quick fix.
