When I tried to install Visual Studio 2005 I go the following error:

Error 1305: Error reading from file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\1033\vsmsoui.dll

Note:  My previous VS2005 install had been corrupted with computer crashing issues.  I have since uninstalled all previous VS 2005 components, as well as, a SQL Server 2005 trial version before attempting to install VS 2005 again.

Your registry may not be getting completely cleared.  Go to this Microsoft site and download the app "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility"

FYI:  I tried the richardsleegers blogspot suggestion without success.

Finally I got it to work from one of the following:
1.  I installed with the same original Visual Studio installation (As opposed to an upgraded version)

Or

2.  I deleted all of the files in the Windows Temp directory

Either way it works now.  My gut feeling is that clearing the temp directory did the trick which might have also been cleared with the Windows Installer cleanup utility.
