VPN is a virtual Private Network. Use a VPN connection to establish a secure connection to a remote network (such as the office). Your computer is then treated like it is on the local network (if you set it up like that, there are quite a few ways to shape the access). The downside is that if you want to open a large document, it has to traverse that connection back to the computer you are using, which, depending on connection quality, may take a while. Citrix, as I think you are asking, is an enhanced version of Remote Desktop Protocol. With that, your "work", such as opening a document happens on the corporate network, not on your computer you are connecting from. This means performance can be much faster. All that traverses the connection between your computer and the Citrix server are screen refreshed, and mouse and keyboard clicks. Very bandwidth efficient. You still want security on that connection, so you may actually use a combination of both a VPN and Citrix for example.
