What kind of AP are you connecting through.  Have you had success connecting other laptops to AppleTalk while connecting to this AP?

Enable AppleTalk on the ethernet port (System Preferences, Network, choose the ethernet adapter, click the AppleTalk tab and apply) and connect your laptop with an ethernet cable to the network to see if it's an issue with your wifi adapter and AppleTalk or if it's your laptop in general.  If it works through the wired port, verify other laptops are able to connect to AppleTalk network wirelessly (I'm sure you have checked that, but I'm just covering all the bases).  Let me know what you find out after testing this.
