file mising for video transition and effect

I have 2 machines xp/pro/sp2, and xp/media centre/sp2.  both have the same problem.   searched internet and some advised to reinstall sp2.  did reinstalled sp2 on xp/pro, worked.  However, the other machine can not boot after reinstallation of sp2.  (boot to saft mode and did a system restore and the computer is fine but transition and effect still not working).  please help.

1. Just to be clear, the application with which you're having problems is Windows Movie Maker?
2. Is it working on the unit that did not fail the SP2 installation?
3. What is the make and model of the unit that failed the SP2 installation?
4.  When you say you can't do video transitions and effects, what exactly do you mean? Do you receive error messages? If so, what exactly do the messages say? Does the unit appear to do something but nothing happens as far as you can see? Does the unit turn itself off?
5. When you say files are missing, do you know specifically which files are gone? How did you make this determination?

1. not the entire program.  just the transition and effect portion
2. that unit had the same problem but been fixed by reinstalling sp2 (service pack 2)
3.HP pavilion a1626n (os is xp/media center edition.  some people told me it is equal to xp/professional)
3. when movie maker is launched,  it can not load the transition and effects.  the message is "the file for video transitions and effects is missing".  as far as i know movie maker comes pre-loaded with 28 effects and 60 transitions.  there are 3 major task on movie maker (1. capture /import video and picture, 2. edit movie. 3. finish movie like saving the movie)  
under edit movie you have 5 choices, one of them is view video transitions. once clicked on, it sould show all the transitions available on the right pane. and another is the view video dffects.  once clicked on, it should  show all available effects on the right pane.
 There is nothing listed(shown) there .
5. the error message did not specify the name of the file. (the message is "the file for video transitions and effects is missing" from startup as mentioned above.

because i fixed one with the re-install of sp2. therefore i think that is the right directions to go. but the boot problem on the other give me doubts.

Coolness. So it seems the real issue is that the 1626n won't accept the SP2 update? What version of       Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition is on the unit?

Thanks for the detailed information. It does help, and yes, I think we are getting closer.

Start | Run | (type) CMD | Press Enter.

In the CMD window, type:

 sfc /scannow

Press Enter. Follow the System File Checker prompts. When SFC is finished, reboot. When the system comes back up, try Movie Maker again. Let us know how it goes.

At the end of the scan, it asked for the xp/pro cd.  This machine never came with a cd.  What should i do?

Inserted the other cd, no luck.  it says wrong cd.

It appears you will need to contact HP for CD-ROM Recovery Discs. The set you need appears to be this one:

XP MCE SP2 64NAemMPA4 + Supp 4 Recovery Kit

Glad it worked. If you didn't get new CDs from HP, would you mind sharing how you solved that problem? It seems to come up a lot with MCE.
