hi,
I want to know about sector level disk imaging, as file level disk imaging is taking lots of time. I want to implement this in my project, but due to lack of knowledge i am unable to start. Please provide me with some tutorials and procedures of sector level disk imaging.

Hi,

can you please elaborate on the difference you percieve about file level and sector level disk image.

what is the scope of your project. Do you want to use VSS. Do you intend to image a hard disk or do you want to image a virtual image running on a virtual server. As when we say image it tries to create a snapshot of data at the block level.

I am using VSS for my windows backup project. I tried to copy files, folders through VSS at file level but that is unable to copy. So i thought to change my technique from VSS to any other sector level copying procedure. Can u help me regarding this? As i have also heard that this snapshot (sector-by-sector imaging) technique is fast as well as helpfull in copying open files.

Hi,

VSS is some thing which is available with windows xp and windows 2003. You will not have vss in win2000 systems.

at the cmd prompt if you type vssadmin list writers

this will list all the writers that are available.

When you use the ntbackup it uses the same vss writers for backup.

you can backup exchange, SQL using the vss writers. You can either schedule backups from the applications or you can use ntbackup for backing up the data.
so you can use VSS and if you can update what are the errors then we can certainly look into it.

Actually I was trying to copy a folder of vista from one partition to other making that drive as secondary in Xp. i used that VSS in Xp. that folder was write protected. But as i know that VSS can read and copy any running file, But it cant, it showed an error of "the folder is write protected. the folder which i was trying to copy was CSC in windows folder of Vista. Now i think there is no other option left apart from cluster level imaging to bring that folder to the other partition.

VSS unlike on earlier versions of windows work differntly on vista

You would need to download the vss 7.2 SDK for your project
