Web users are exeperiencing a slow speed when connecting to the web site

The current situation for the hosting of the web site is as follow:
We have a domain that is registered with a web hosting company. As soon as a client connects, the connection gets routed from the domain to the server on our side where the application code and all the necessary web application files are lying. SQL server is on the server as well. I expexted the rendering of the web pages to be much faster as the web site and sql server 2005 is on one box. Is there a  reason why the web app is alomost the same speed when connecting to a sql server remotely on another server. Should it not be faster when the web app and sql is on one box?

If the web server and the sql are on the same box won't the box be doing more work?
