Adobe 8.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close when you try to open it.

I have a brand new Dell laptop, using Windows XP, Earthlink IP.

I have installed and re-installed Adboe 8.1. But I can't even get it open. Every time I click on it to open it,
I get the error message... "Adobe has encountered a problem and needs to close". If I had an older version of Adobe, I would try that but I can't find one. Does anyone know why this problem is happening?

Does it freeze after you launch the app but before the error?  If so try running this in your command prompt:
(see attached snippet)
(To open command prompt, click Start > Run and type (without quotes) "cmd")

This command will delete any Adobe temp files (the star is a wildcard).
cd %temp%
del acr*.tmp /s
